The knights added to their roster again on Monday through 6'9'' forward Zephi Sharman. After averaging 10.1 points and 7.8 rebounds for Barking Abbey Academy, Zephi will be looking to continue his strong play in Newcastle whilst also studying a degree in maths.
Team Newcastle are already familiar with Zephi, having played against him as part of Kent Crusaders in 3 highly competitive match-ups between NBL Division 2 and the Patron's Cup. Seeing him first hand brought him to the attention of the team and made the decision to sign him an easy one. In addition to his NBL experience, Zephi has also represented England at U16 level and Barking Abbey in the Elite Academy Basketball league (EABL), winning the tournament in 2016/17.
Team Newcastle continued their recruitment drive Friday with the addition of Thanasis Ioakeimidis. The Greek-born guard most recently played for BG Hagen in Germany where he averaged 11.6 points and 3.6 assists per 28 minutes of action. He joins with a reputation as a defensive stopper as he also averaged 2.2 steals during his time there.
Thanasis seems keen to get started, saying "I am very happy that I have become a member of the Newcastle team! I am eager for the new season to start and I strongly believe that with hard practice and the guidance of our coaches we will have a successful season while also playing good basketball." Head Coach Ian Hewitt had been looking to add a further international presence to his squad after deals for Patrick Wrencher and Joey Bennett were confirmed earlier in the week. Thanasis has real international pedigree, having previously represented Greece in the FIBA U20 European Championships, as well as playing in the top division of Greek basketball. |
